It is one of the world's lowest airports, built three metres below sea level in the year 1916. It is also considered the third busiest airport in Europe with the highest passenger traffic 52.2 million recorded in 2022, and is 18 km away from the city. Moreover, it offers ventures of 104 airlines travelling to 97 countries, having six runways.
Serving both civilian and military purposes, this airport is the second largest airport in the country which was established in 1932, handling millions of passengers in a year. Its single terminal handles around 5 million passengers yearly, with eight airlines travelling to 82 destinations. Besides, it is 9 km away from the city.
Better known for cargo handling, it is a regional airport near the Municipality of Beek. Though the airport offers flights to limited destinations, it is considered the second largest hub of cargo in the Netherlands established in 1919, around 4.1 km away from the city. It has handled 176,000 passengers and 60 tons of cargo in the past.
Groningen Airport was established in 1931. With an average of one departure a day, this airport mainly focuses on making aviation sustainable, and is 8.9 km away from the city. However, it also offers domestic and internal ventures with popular airlines such as FlyBe, Wizz Air, Danish Air Transport etc.
Counted in the list of the busiest airports in the Netherlands, Rotterdam The Hague Airport offers flights both for domestic and international travel, and is 6 km away from the airport. It offers six airlines such as Transavia Airlines, Air France, City Jet etc. Built in the year 1956, it is the third-largest airport in the country to have flights that connect to 48 destinations.
Flamingo International Airport was opened in 1936. With five flights taking off weekly, this airport facilitates both domestic and international travel, and is 7 km away from the city. The popular airlines travelling from here include KLM Royal Dutch, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, etc. It serves a total of 7 airlines to 6 destinations.
Kempen Airport, also known as Budel Airport, was built in 1970 at a distance of 37 km from the city. It is a general aviation airport located near the Belgium border in the southwest of the country. It has two runways, one is an asphalt runway, and another one is for microlight flights.
Den Helder Airport primarily focuses on the transportation of the offshore energy industry. Besides, it is one of the largest helicopter airports built in the late 1960s. Moreover, it is the only airport in the Netherlands to depart its passengers to primary energy areas, and is 6.2 km away from the city.
Lelystad Airport is the largest General Aviation Airport in the Netherlands. It does not serve as usual passenger flights and is mainly open to private jets. However, even then it is designated as the head-quarter of a Dutch airline named AIS Airlines, built in 1973, and 6.5 km away from the city.
Twente Airport was opened in 1931 at a distance of 38.3 km away from the city . It connects the eastern region of the country with the world. This airport acts as an aviation base and occasionally a civil one. Besides, it also serves as a technology base, where aircraft are maintained and brought for further development. With one runway, this airport offers the departure of private jets for domestic and international travel.
The Royal Netherlands Air Force mainly uses Gilze Rijen Airport as a base for the arrival and departure of helicopters and private jets. However, this airport does not serve as usual passenger airports. Being the oldest airfield in the Netherlands, it has a rich history that dates back to the 1900s and was built 48 km away from the city . The airport now has two runways and serves mainly as an operational airfield for landing helicopters.
Woensdrecht Air Base is one of the oldest airbases in the Netherlands built in 1934, around 10 km away from the city. Though initially a glider, it eventually expanded into an airbase. It currently has one runway for only the Royal Netherlands Air Force. They use it as a logistic base and for aircraft training purposes.
Volkel Air Base was built in the year 1940 at a distance of 96.7 km away from the city. It is a military airbase that is considered one of the major operational bases for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Moreover, this airbase handles larger aircraft having two parallel runways.
Though initially started as an airport, it eventually transformed into an airbase in 1938 and is 2.4 km away from the city. Leeuwarden Air Base has been used as a base for fighter aircraft after the Germans invaded the country during the 1940s. However, the airbase is also open for travellers to experience events like skydiving or to learn flying lessons.
Valkenburg Air Base was built in 1939 at a distance of 50 km from the city. It was an aviation centre that the Royal Netherlands Navy used as its base till 2006. The airbase is officially closed. However, it serves occasionally for special events where piston aircraft and gliders come into play.
Soesterberg Air Base used to be a military airbase in the Netherlands built in 1911 at a distance of 14 km from the city. Though it was among the first few airbases constructed in the country, it was closed in 2008 due to the sudden decrease in the budget required to maintain the military arm forces.
