Soekarno Hatta International Airport is the largest and busiest international airport in Indonesia. The airport started flight operations in 1985, serving the metropolitan area of Jakarta on Java Island. Formerly known as Jakarta Cengkareng Airport, this airport is situated approximately 32 kilometres away from the centre of the city.
Juanda International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Indonesia, serving around 500 aircraft daily. Established as an air base of the Indonesian Navy in 1964, this airport is situated within a city limit of 12 kilometres from Downtown Surabaya. It has a single runway, a 15-storey control tower and 19 aerobridges.
The 2nd busiest international airport, Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is situated in Ngurah Rai, which is about 13 kilometres away from Downtown Denpasar. In 2016, this airport won the World's 3rd Best Airport award for offering world-class services to 25 million passengers annually.
Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman International Airport lies within a distance of 10 kilometres from Balikpapan. This airport has a water recycling plant and an energy-efficient air-conditioned terminal, making it one of the few eco-friendly Indonesian airports.
Kualanamu International Airport is the 3rd largest international airport operating since 2013. Primarily located in Deli Serdang Regency, this airport is about 23 kilometres away from Medan City. Among all airports in Indonesia, it is the first one to install an automatic baggage handling system, facilitating passengers during baggage claims.
About 17 km northeast of Makassar lies another international airport in Indonesia, Sultan Hasanuddin Airport. Built in 1935, this airport was originally known as Kadieng Airfield. It is the first Indonesian airport to have a high-tech architectural design. Currently, it has the capacity to handle the operations of 3 wide-body aircraft every day.
Known as Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport, this airport initially served as a military airbase of the Indonesian Army. The airport started providing commercial flights from the year 1966. Situated about 8 kilometres away from its centre, Ahmad Yani Airport is the main gateway for flights to Semarang City and its surroundings.
Another addition to the list of airports in Indonesia is Husein Sastranegara International Airport, situated within 5 kilometres from the centre of the city Bandung. This airport was built during the Dutch colonial period in the 1930s. Recognised for providing outstanding services to passengers, this airport won the Best Airport in Asia-Pacific Award in 2020.
Kertajati International Airport is the 2nd largest airport in Indonesia and 2nd primary international airport serving the Bandung metropolitan area. Starting its operations in 2018 and serving as the main gateway to West Java, this airport lies within a distance of less than one kilometre from the downtown city.
Established in 1940, Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport is one of the significant airports in Indonesia serving the Riau province. This airport shares its runway with an airbase of the Indonesian Air Force. The airport is located about 8 kilometres from the downtown city and is easily accessible via public transportation.
Originally used as a customs aerodrome, Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport is an international airport now used for civilian purposes. Built in the late 1930s, this airport also serves as a significant stop for wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 777, Airbus A330 and Boeing 747. It lies within a city limit of 12 kilometres from downtown.
Kalimarau International Airport, known as Raja Alam International Airport or Berau Kalimarau Airport, is another domestic airport in Indonesia. It is located on Borneo Island. Elevated 18 metres above sea level, this airport has 2 aerobridges and an 1800-metre-long asphalt runway. Established in the year 2012, this airport primarily serves the Tanjung Redeb district.
Formerly known as Blimbingsari Airport, it is the first green airport, functioning in Indonesia. The airport was established in 2010 and is approximately 18 kilometres from Banyuwangi City. It has won several prestigious awards, including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, in 2022.
Dortheys Hiyo Eluay International Airport is the easternmost Indonesian airport and the largest airport on New Guinea Island. Popularly known as Sentani International Airport, it is considered the port of entry into Papua Island. It was built during the 1940s, near Lake Sentani, about 40 kilometres from downtown Jayapura. This airport has a 3000 metre-long runway and 3 airbridges.
About 19 kilometres from downtown lies Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport, a small airport providing scheduled flights to Lombok and other nearby regional destinations. In addition, the airport premises include a control tower, a base operating room and a 1600-metre-long runway. This airport is named after the last Sultan of the Sumbawa Sultanate, Muhammad Kaharuddin III.
Samarinda Baru Airport, commonly known as APT Pranoto Airport, is the domestic airport serving the Samarinda City of East Kalimantan. This airport primarily handles flight operations with narrow-body jets. It has 4 boarding and jet bridge gates. Functioning since 2018, this airport is one of the newly-established airports in Indonesia.
One of the largest and busiest airports in Indonesia, Domine Eduard Osok Airport lies on the Bird's Head Peninsula, within a distance of 4 kilometres from Sorong. It serves as one of the entry points to the Raja Ampat Islands. The airport is the 2nd largest airport surpassing 2.4 million passengers from Indonesian Papua annually.
