As per the Motor Vehicles Act, every vehicle owner must have a driving licence. This important document is issued by the regional RTO, which helps vehicle owners to be compliant with traffic rules and regulations. It is a legal permit that enables one to drive without facing any restrictions.

Different types of driving licences issued in Noida are as follows:

1. Learner’s Licence

A learner’s licence is provided when a candidate is still learning to drive a vehicle. This licence is valid for up to 6 months. In 6 months, if the candidate is still not ready, they must apply for their learner’s licence again. However, while holding a learner’s licence, drivers must be accompanied by another experienced driver.

2. Permanent Licence

After 6 months, the permanent licence is issued. However, there are certain conditions. Candidates must be above 18 years of age and must have cleared the driving test to obtain a permanent driving licence. This licence is valid for 20 years or until the licence holder turns 50. When licence holders turn 50, they must renew their driving licence, irrespective of the issue date.

3. Commercial Licence

A commercial driving licence is issued to those who drive commercial or transport vehicles like buses, cabs, or goods-carrying vehicles. Unlike a permanent licence, candidates must be above 20 to be eligible for a commercial driving licence. Moreover, a candidate must qualify for the 8th standard and have a minimum driving experience of 1 year.

4. International Vehicle Permit

An international driving licence allows individuals to drive in a foreign country. Candidates must hold a permanent driving licence before applying for an International Driving Permit. This permit remains valid for a year; candidates must apply for it again after it expires.

Driver's Licence

Here are a few steps that one must follow to apply for a driving licence online in Noida:

• Step 1: Go to the official website of Uttar Pradesh Transport. 
• Step 2: Tap on ‘Online Services’ and then hover over ‘Driving License Related Services’ to choose the option ‘New Driving License’.

• Step 3: Then it will direct you to another page where you need to select the option ‘Apply for Driving License’.

• Step 4: After that, you will have to fill out the application with all the necessary details and documents to proceed further.

Learner's Licence

However, before applying for a permanent driving licence in Noida, one must get a learner's licence. Here are the steps that will guide one to do:

• Step 1: Go to the official Sarathi website.
• Step 2: Select ‘Apply for Learner’s licence’ and complete filling out the form with the necessary details. Proceed to upload the necessary documents. One must also upload their photo and signature. Then one has to initiate the payment, substantiate the status of the payment, print the receipt and finally book slots.
• Step 3: Applicants can get their learner’s licence then by Aadhaar authentication. Here applicants will get two options:
  • If their Aadhaar details are updated, they can proceed by clicking on submit via Aadhaar authentication.
  • They will proceed with Submit without Aadhaar authentication if their Aadhaar card is not updated.

Those who do not want to visit the RTO and give a learner’s licence test to obtain a driving licence test must click on 'Submit via Aadhaar Authentication’. Provide the Aadhaar number and be ready for the test.

Applicants applying for a learner's licence must mention the state name and nearby RTO office in the Learner's licence application form. Further, they must mention the vehicle type for which they are applying for the licence.

Proceed to attach documents and initiate payment. In addition, applicants must mention the time slot when they can give the computer test. (Latest traffic rules and regulations have combined, helping applicants to appear for the computer Driving Learners test.

• Step 4: The password needed to appear for the rest will be sent to the registered mobile number via SMS. On passing the test, one can download the learner’s licence online. The licence is valid for a period of 6 months.

After one month of getting the learner’s licence, applicants will have to visit the same website again to make an application for a permanent driving licence.

After visiting the website, applicants have to again mention the necessary details and initiate the payment. After that, they will receive a time slot for the driving test. On passing the test, applicants will get a permanent driving licence.

Applicants can opt for both offline and online means to make an application for a driving licence in Noida. The offline application is mentioned below:

Step 1: Go to a nearby office of RTO Noida in person and collect the driving licence application form.

Step 2: Fill out the form with the necessary details, attach the required documents and submit it at the RTO.

Step 3: Pay the application fee and get a slot allotment for the driving test.

Step 4: Attend and pass the test on the scheduled date and get a driving licence.

The final step towards obtaining a driving licence is to appear for the driving test. The test is conducted as per the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and is different for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

Driving Test for Two and Three-Wheeler Vehicles

The inspector is always present during the test, and the applicant has to drive around the imaginary border ‘8’ to ensure the vehicle doesn’t stall. If the applicant does that successfully, they are permitted to drive on the public road.

Driving Test for Four-Wheelers

For a four-wheeler, the applicant has to drive on a designed road and make sure that they are not touching any columns. If the column touches any part of the vehicle, then the applicant is disqualified. If not, then they are allowed to drive on the road. After that, the inspector decides if they cleared the DL test or not.

In case the applicant doesn’t qualify for the DL test, they can re-take it after 7 days.

Residents of Noida can easily apply for an international driving licence at any RTO office in Uttar Pradesh. One will have to submit the necessary documents and pay the application fee.

• Proof of nationality.
• Residential proof.
