As the most populated state in India, Uttar Pradesh has a massive number of vehicles, be they private or commercial. Therefore, it has become more important for authorities to check everyone’s driving licence and their validity.
As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, it is mandatory to carry a valid DL when driving on Indian roads. It is a legal document that indicates the individual’s understanding of road signs and traffic laws and provides the authority to drive a vehicle on public roads.

How Long is the Validity of a Driving Licence in Uttar Pradesh?
In Uttar Pradesh, a driving licence is valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 40, whichever comes earlier. After that, it will be re-issued for 10 years and 5 years thereafter.
Grace Period for Renewal of Driving Licence in Uttar Pradesh
There is a 30-day grace period from the date of expiry in which you can renew your driving licence. A nominal fee of ₹300 will be chargeable on renewal requests after this time period.
Additionally, a fine of ₹1,000 will be levied each year from the grace period’s expiry date.
What Happens if You Don’t Renew Your Driving Licence on Time?
In case you fail to renew your driving licence within the 30-day grace period, you are liable to pay a penalty of ₹300.

How to Renew Driving Licence in UP Online?
Step 1: Visit Parivahan Sewa's official portal. Select "Online Services" and select "Driving Licence Related Services."
Step 2: Select the state "Uttar Pradesh" from the drop-down list. A page will redirect you to Parivahan Sarathi's official portal.
Step 3: Select "Driving Licence" and choose "Services on DL".
Step 4: Follow all the instructions and click on “Confirm”.
Step 5: Enter the relevant information such as driving licence number, date of birth, and category of driving licence holder. Also, select state and RTO.
Step 6: Confirm the details and choose driving licence renewal as your required service. Once an acknowledgement slip is generated, take a printout of it.
How to Renew Driving Licence in Uttar Pradesh Offline?
- Visit your nearest RTO
- Fill in Form 2. You can also download it from the official portal UP RTO.
- Attach the relevant documents and submit them along with the prescribed fee.

Step 1: Visit the official website of Parivahan Sewa. Select "Driving Licence Related Services" under the "Online Services" tab.
Step 2: Select "Uttar Pradesh" as a state from the drop-down list. Now opt for "Application Status", available at the right side corner of your screen.
Step 3: Enter your application number and date of birth. Submit it after entering the captcha code.
Alternatively, you can also check the status by accessing the official portal of UP RTO.
- Select "Online Services" and click on the "Application Status".
- You will be redirected to the Parivahan Sathi. Accordingly, perform the remaining steps as mentioned above.
RTO advises applicants to check the status of renewal of DL in UP online after two weeks from the date of application. However, if you cannot view any status regarding your application, visit your nearest RTO.
Important Guidelines to Follow During Driving License Renewal in Uttar Pradesh
