Getting a driving licence is mandatory in Gujarat, like in any other state of India. It is quite easy for people as the whole process can be done online. In addition, there are different types of driving licences available that the people of Gujarat can avail of.

Different types of driving licences issued in Gujarat are as follows:

1. Learner’s Licence

A learner’s licence is provided when a candidate is still learning to drive a vehicle. This licence is valid for up to 6 months. In 6 months, if the candidate is still not ready, they must apply for their learner’s licence again. However, while holding a learner’s licence, drivers must be accompanied by another experienced driver.

2. Permanent Licence

After 6 months, the permanent licence is issued. However, there are certain conditions. Candidates must be above 18 years of age and must have cleared the driving test to obtain a permanent driving licence. This licence is valid for 20 years or until the licence holder turns 50. When licence holders turn 50, they must renew their driving licence, irrespective of the issue date.

3. Commercial Licence

A commercial driving licence is issued to those who drive commercial or transport vehicles like buses, cabs, or goods-carrying vehicles. Unlike a permanent licence, candidates must be above 20 to be eligible for a commercial driving licence. Moreover, a candidate must qualify for the 8th standard and have a minimum driving experience of 1 year.

4. International Vehicle Permit

An international driving licence allows individuals to drive in a foreign country. Candidates must hold a permanent driving licence before applying for an International Driving Permit. This permit remains valid for a year; candidates must apply for it again after it expires.

The eligibility criteria for applying for a driving licence in Gujarat are as follows:

• Applicants should be 18+ years old.
• If applying for a commercial vehicle, applicants must be 20 years old.
• Before applying for a driving licence, applicants should have a learner’s licence.
• Applicants must know all traffic rules.
• Applicants must apply for a driving licence within 180 days or after 30 days of getting a learner’s licence.

Documents required to apply for a driving licence in Gujarat are as follows:

1. Proof of Age

To apply for a Licence in Gujarat, you need to do the following:

• Step 1: Go to the Parivahan Sewa website.
• Step 2: Select the ‘Online Services’ tab and then ‘Driving Licence-Related Services’.

• Step 3: Then select Gujarat as your state.

The steps to apply for a driving licence offline in Gujarat are as follows:

• Step 1: Go to the nearest Regional Transport Office or RTO.
• Step 2: Collect an application form.
• Step 3: Fill out the details like:
  • Address.
  • Full name.
  • Educational Qualification.
  • Father’s name.
  • Blood group.
  • Date and place of birth.
  • Identification mark.
• Step 4: Submit necessary documents such as address proof and age proof.
• Step 5: Submit your passport-sized photograph.
• Step 6: After finishing, get your learner’s licence test slot.
• Step 7: Apply for a permanent licence within 180 days of getting your learner’s licence.

Driving Test For Two and Three-Wheeler Vehicles

This section also has two types of tests that the applicant has to undergo: one is the ground test, while the other is the road test. You have to ensure the vehicle is not going outside the imaginary ‘8’ outline. Like the test for four-wheelers, an RTO Inspector examines your driving skills and decides the final result.

Driving Test For Four-Wheelers

The exam is strictly conducted by the RTO inspector, who assesses your driving skills on the ground or on the road. The applicant needs to make sure not to touch any columns. The inspector may ask you to drive in certain patterns or by the traffic rules. 

Moreover, an applicant can take a re-test after 7 days if they fail.

The process for getting an international driving licence in Gujarat is as follows:

• Step 1: Report to your nearest R.T.O.
• Step 2: Collect Form 4(A) and medical Form-1A.
• Step 3: Provide necessary documents such as a visa copy, present driving licence photocopy and passport-sized photos.
• Step 4: Pay ₹ 500 as fees.
• Step 5: Get your international driving licence delivered to your address after verification.

Alternatively, you can also go to the Parivahan Sewa website and apply for an international driving licence. However, this international driving licence cannot be renewed after its expiry.

To renew a driving licence in Gujarat, one can follow these steps:

• Step 1: Visit your nearest R.T.O and get Form no. 9.
• Step 2: Attach necessary documents such as:
  • Self-attested address and age proof.
  • 2 copies of passport-sized photographs.
  • A copy of your old driving licence.
• Step 3: Submit your original driving licence.
• Step 4: People above 50 years of age should submit medical form 1-A.
• Step 5: Pay ₹ 200 as a smart card fee; further, pay an additional ₹ 50 for any delay.
• Step 6: Submit NOC from the respective R.T.O.

You can also go to the Parivahan Sewa site and apply for a renewal conveniently.

Here are the documents that are likely required when applying for DL renewal in Gujarat online or offline.

• Form 2 was completed and submitted for renewal of DL (This form can be downloaded through the Parivahan Sewa website).
• Original/expired Driving Licence
• Identity proof (like an Aadhaar Card, etc.)
• Any identity proof such as residence (Electricity bill, Ration Card, etc.).
• Age proof (self-attested copy)
• Photographs (Two passport size and taken within a year).
• Medical fitness form 1A (if the applicant is over forty or applying for a transport vehicle driving licence).
