Due to increased cases of offences such as speeding, reckless driving, violators of red traffic light signals, and many more, the Uttar Pradesh government has recently introduced stricter measures on traffic law violators.

The state administration has also initiated an e-challan to penalise offenders using high-tech cameras at various signal points in Lucknow. While the high fines may appear to some as unreasonable, the authorities justify them as necessary to prevent the increase in traffic offences.

An e-challan is an electronic ticket issued by the traffic police authorities for violations of traffic regulations. It is common in several states in India, including Uttar Pradesh. 

It has been designed to ensure that discipline prevails among motorists and punish those who disobey traffic laws as they navigate through the congested streets in Lucknow and other parts of the country. 

Some typical offences that lead to e-challans in Lucknow include violating red signals, speeding, not wearing a helmet, using a mobile while driving, driving after drinking, and other related offences. The system is integrated with the VAHAN 4 portal, which has already been implemented in all the districts of Lucknow.

An e-Challan is simply an electronically generated challan through an Electronic Challan System. e-Challan recently replaced traditional pieces of paper several months ago. 

To address the increasing rate of accidents on Indian roads, the traffic police have implemented the ‘CCTV-enabled e-Challan system’. It captures a live view of the ongoing traffic by having a CCTV camera fixed in a particular area. 

After the e-challan is generated and delivered to the vehicle's owner's residential or commercial address. At the same time, the information is submitted to the traffic police's official website. The violator is then informed about the e-challan through an SMS sent to his or her registered mobile phone number.

It is best to regularly check the Lucknow Traffic Police website to see if an e-Challan has been issued for an offender who is unaware of it. 

You can also check for e-challans issued via different methods, such as the Parivahan Government Portal, the Lucknow Traffic Police website, and the Digit app.

• Step 1: Visit the official Parivahan portal. You can also download the app from the App Store or Play Store.
• Step 2: To check the status of an e-challan, you have different options, such as the Challan Number and many more, the Vehicle Number, and the DL Number.

• Step 3: Fill in the necessary details, punch in the captcha code, and click ‘Get Detail’.
• Step 4: All the challan details will flash on your screen.

Another alternative way to check the status of e-Challan is through the Lucknow Traffic Police Website. Here are the steps to do so:

• Step 1: Visit the Uttar Pradesh Police website.
• Step 2: From the blue box about the Traffic Directorate Portal, click on the ‘Click Here to View Online Challans’ tab.

• Step 3:  You will be directed to the Vahan Citizen Services portal. Enter the vehicle's Registration number.

• Step 4: Enter the Captcha Verification code in the required column.
• Step 5: Tap on ‘Show Details’

Review the details of any pending traffic tickets displayed.

To see the status of your pending e-Challans against your vehicle in the Digit app, click here or follow the below steps:

• Step 1: Head to the 'Check Pending Challans' option.
• Step 2: Enter your vehicle’s registration number and hit the ‘Check Details’ button.

Lucknow has three payment methods for online e-challans: the Parivahan website, the Lucknow Traffic Police portal, and the offline method.

You can pay for your e-challan in Lucknow using the official Indian Government portal, Parivahan. Here are the steps to do so:

• Step 1: Visit the Parivahan website.

• Step 1: Go to the official UP Police Traffic Directorate portal.
• Step 2: Tap on ‘Click Here to view and pay online challan’

• Step 5: Enter the Captcha code and click ‘Get Detail’.
• Step 6: This will display the details of any challans that are still in progress if there are any.
• Step 7: If there are any outstanding e-challans, click ‘Pay Now.’
• Step 8: You will be redirected to the payment portal, where you can complete the payment using various options.

After making the payment, you will receive a confirmation receipt as an acknowledgement of the payment made.

Given below are the steps you will have to follow to pay your traffic challan offline:

• Go to the nearest traffic police station, where you must present a copy of your Lucknow e challan.

• You can also pay off your pending challan at your residence's nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO).

• Go to the authorities who are involved in the collection of traffic fines.

• You must pay the penalty in cash. However, you can also ask the authorities to check for outstanding fines (if any) and pay them on the spot.

• After payment, you will receive a receipt indicating that you have cleared your e-challan dues.
