As more people are visiting this beautiful state, Kerela, with the growth of tourism and the economy, there has been a significant surge in the use of cars. This seems to have contributed to increased accidents, traffic jams and pollution within the state’s large stretch of roads. 

As a result of their desire to enhance road safety and punish reckless drivers, the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department changed the traffic rules and added the e-Challan system to make it more efficient and catch violators.

The Kerala government implemented the e-challan system to replace the manual system for managing traffic violations. This is an online project being implemented in conjunction with the state police as well as the Regional Transport Office to replace the current physical fines. 

In line with the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act 2019, which brought in tough rules and enhanced penalties for offending drivers, authorities in Kerala have implemented the rules alongside the penalty. 

This automated system is considered beneficial for enhancing transparency and effectiveness in issuing and processing traffic fines across the state.

 An e-challan is an electronic traffic ticket for violations perpetrated by cars and their owners, which are identified by electronic systems. To address the issue of unfair dodging of traffic challans, a method known as e-challans was introduced to ensure that the public cannot avoid challans in any unlawful way.

When a car breaks traffic laws such as overspeeding, jumping signals, or not having insurance, sensors and cameras record the infringements. An electronic challan is also prepared at the spot containing the violation details, its location, the time of the violation when the challan was prepared, and the fine the violator has to pay.

The e-challan is sent to the vehicle's owner at his/her registered address through the Internet. Another form of e-challan notification is through an SMS to the mobile number provided at the time of vehicle registration.

It is best to regularly check the Kerala Traffic Police website to see if an e-Challan has been issued for an offence that the offender is unaware of. 

You can also check for e-challans issued via different methods, such as the Parivahan Government Portal, the Kerala Traffic Police website, and the Digit app.

• Step 1: Visit the official website of Parivahan e-challan.
• Step 2: Enter your DL, vehicle, or challan number, do Captcha verification, and click on ‘Get Detail’.

• Step 3:  After that, you will be able to see all your challans, including necessary details like location, time, offence, etc.

The second alternative is to go to the Kerala Traffic Police website to check the status of the e-Challan. Here are the steps to do so: Here are the steps to do so:

• Step 1: Access the official website of Kerala Motor Vehicles Department and click on ‘e challan’.

• Step 2: You will be redirected to the Parivahan e-challan website.

• Step 3: Fill in the Challan number/DL number/Vehicle number, captcha code, and tap on ‘Get Detail’.
• Step 4: Then, you will be able to view all your challans, including essential information.

• Step 1: Go to your phone’s application store, Play Store or the App Store, and download the Digit application.
• Step 2: Go for ‘Check Pending Challans’.
• Step 3: Enter the registration number in the space provided and click ‘Check Details’.

Kerala has three payment methods for e-challan online: the Parivahan website, the Kerala Traffic Police portal, and the offline method.

Visit the Parivahan website affiliated with the Indian government to pay for your traffic e-challan in Kerala. Here are the steps to do so:

• Step 1: Visit the Parivahan website. 
• Step 2: Enter the challan number, vehicle number, or your driver’s license number, verify the Captcha, and click ‘Get Detail’.

• Step 1: Visit the official website of Kerala traffic police.
• Step 2: Enter your vehicle’s number and click on the Search button.

• Step 3: Then, they will display the amount to be paid, the violation, and a CCTV photo to support the claim.
• Step 4: Click on the ‘pay’ button.
• Step 5: You will be redirected to the net banking page for payment.
• Step 6: As always, consumers can pay with debit cards, credit cards, net banking or any other accepted mode of payment.

Given below are the steps you will have to follow to pay your traffic challan offline:

• Step 1: To begin with, one should carry along his/her driver’s license, proof of address and identification, and the original traffic violation challan form.
• Step 2: Go to the nearest traffic police station in your city. Pay your fine in cash, and make sure you get a receipt.
• Step 3: Alternatively, you can also look for an officer with a handheld device that supports the e-challans payment. Swipe your debit or credit card to pay without cash promptly.
