Karnataka New Traffic Rule 2024

From early October 2024, vehicle owners in Karnataka are mandated by law to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP), and failing to do so will charge them a fine of ₹500 to ₹1,000. Earlier, the deadline for installation was set at September 10.

HSRP or High-Security Registration Plates are unique designs of the car’s number plates meant to increase their security and credibility. These are highly secure plates with some of the following aspects: an identification number and a hologram. 

The primary purpose of HSRP is twofold: first, to minimise the acts of fitting fake number plates on vehicles, thus minimising the incidence of car-related offences; and second, to guarantee the original registration and ownership of the vehicles.

Through these standardised plates, authorities seek to introduce a system that protects vehicle owners and assists in identifying and fighting crime, thus acting as a shield.

HSRP, or High-Security Registration Plates, are required for all vehicles used in the Karnataka region. This requirement applies to new and old vehicles on the road. 

Incorporating the HSRP makes new car plates compulsory in the state as part of the effort to introduce a standardised car identification system to help prevent car theft and forgery of new car plates by criminals.

High-security Registration Plates (HSRP) were launched in Karnataka in the first quarter of 2019 as per the guidelines issued by the MoRT&H. Originally planned to be active as of June 1, 2019, the introduction of the measure was hindered by increased demand and the challenging organisation of the process. 

Understanding these challenges, the Karnataka government has been lenient and has been giving extensions for the installation of the HSRP. The most recent extension extended the compliance date to July 4, 2024, so vehicle owners will have more time to embrace this new registration system. 

These extensions serve the state’s double purpose of trying to implement this critical security measure while considering the challenges of applying it to Karnataka's large vehicle population.

HSRP (High-security Registration Plates) are compulsory for all categories of motor vehicles used in Karnataka state, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and all commercial vehicles. This mandate encompasses all vehicles, both permanent and temporary registration numbers because the temporary ones need HSRP to be changed upon receiving the permanent registration numbers.

Owners registered before 2019 should change their vehicles to HSRP to prevent arrest and ensure their vehicles are safe. Most vehicles bought after 2019 are HSRP compliant, as manufacturers have incorporated this into their manufacturing processes.

Getting the High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) in Karnataka involves a relatively easy online procedure. Vehicle owners can follow the simple guidelines outlined below on the HSRP portal to get their HSRP.

• Step 1: Access the Book My HSRP website.

• Step 2: Click the ‘Book’ button underneath the ‘High-Security Registration Plate with a Colour Sticker’.
• Step 3: Fill in the details, such as the registration state, Karnataka, the vehicle’s chassis number, engine number, and captcha.

• Step 4: Select the appointment slot and place to have HSRP installed

The documents required to apply for a High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) in Karnataka are as follows.

• Registration Certificate (RC).
• Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate.
• Valid Insurance Papers.
• Proof of Address.
• Recent Coloured Passport-sized Photograph.

High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) tracking in Karnataka is a straightforward procedure through which vehicle owners can check the status of their applications. To check the HSRP status, please follow these steps:

• Step 1: Open the official Book my HSRP website.
• Step 2: On the right side of the screen, click the link that says ‘Track Your Order’.

• Step 3: Enter the necessary details like:
  • Order number
  • Vehicle registration number
  • Captcha code

• Step 4: Position the cursor on the ‘Search’ button.

If you have a damaged or lost HSRP in Karnataka, you can replace it by applying for another one. To do so, follow a straightforward online procedure. To obtain a duplicate HSRP in Karnataka, follow these steps:

• Step 1: Open the official website of Book My HSPR.
• Step 2: Find the ‘Replacement/Retain/Transfer’ option on the webpage and click ‘Book’.

• Step 3: Then, enter your vehicle details, including:
  • Engine Number
  • Registration Number
  • Chassis Number

• Step 4: Choose the state of registration as Karnataka.

• Step 5: Check the captcha code and click on ‘Click Here’.

To cancel an HSRP booking and seek a refund of the money paid in Karnataka, follow these steps: 

• Step 1: Visit the Book My HSRP portal.
• Step 2: Find the ‘Cancel Order’ option at the top of the page. Clicking this will take you to the cancellation page.

• Step 3: Input your vehicle registration details, order number, and captcha.
