To curb the rising threats of speeding, rash driving, drunk driving, etc., the Government of India has amended the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 in 2019. Understandably, a direct result of the act has been a rise in Mumbai traffic police fine checks, a crucial step to implement the strict rules and norms that have been introduced by the amendment.

Further, to facilitate the collection of traffic fines, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced the E-challan system to facilitate payment of traffic fines online.

Mumbai, the financial capital of our country, was one of the first cities to incorporate digital setup. Consequently, the e-Challan system was also instilled in Mumbai. It is updated instantaneously when an offender is identified by the police and authorities.

As a result, checking the Mumbai traffic police e-Challan status is crucial for offenders since not clearing fines can compound them.

E-challan, or Electronic Challan, is the digital version of the age-old challan issued by police and authorities to offenders. A shift to the digital setup allows faster updates and the option for offenders to clear their fines easily online. It has been introduced across India to enhance the speed and processing of traffic violation penalties. It was an initiative by India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

An e-challan is issued if you violate any traffic norm. To monitor whether vehicles are following stipulated traffic rules, several cameras are placed strategically on each road in the city. If you are found violating any traffic rule, you will receive an SMS notifying you of the issuance of an E-challan. You will then have to follow up with its payment within 60 days of issuance.

It is best to regularly check the Maharashtra Traffic Police website to see if an eChallan has been issued for an offence unknown to the offender. You can also check for e-challans issued to you via different methods, such as the Parivahan Government Portal, the Maharashtra Police Headquarters website, and the Digit app. 

Following are the steps to check e-Challan status using the Parivahan portal:

Step 1: Visit the official website for e-challan.

Step 2: Navigate to“Check Details” on the website homepage.

Step 1: Navigate to the official website of the Maharashtra Police Department’s e-Challan payment portal

Step 2: Enter the last four digits of your vehicle’s chassis or engine number, in addition to your vehicle registration number.

There are three methods of paying traffic e-challan online in Mumbai, the Parivahan website, the Maharashtra Transport official portal and the offline method.

You can pay for your traffic e-challan in Mumbai by using the official Indian Government portal, Parivahan. Here are the steps to do so:

Step 1: Go to the Parivahan e-challan website.

Step 2: Enter your Driving License/Challan number/Vehicle number on the “Challan Details: section under “Pay Online.”

Step 1: Visit the official webpage of Maharashtra Transport

Step 2: Then click on the e-challan Parivahan website link.

Step 3: As soon as you are redirected to the Parivahan webpage, input your challan number/vehicle number/driving license number.

If you prefer to pay the e-challan issued by Maharashtra traffic police offline, you have two options:

1.  Go to the traffic police station in Mumbai and provide your Driving Licence, Address Proof, ID Proof, and the traffic violation challan. Ensure you pay the traffic fine in cash and obtain the receipt.

2.  Alternatively, you can locate a traffic police officer having a handheld e-challan payment device. Use your debit/credit card to make a convenient cashless payment on the spot.
