Apart from knowing checking PAN card cancellation status, here’s how one can choose an online method of cancelling a PAN card using simplified steps:
Apply for PAN Card Cancellation Online
Step 1: Visit the official website of a TIN-NSDL portal.
Step 2: Under "Services" clicks the drop-down and choose "Change/Correction in PAN data". Select "Apply Now."
Step 3: The redirected page will take you to the "Online PAN Application Form". On this page, one needs to make changes or corrections in the PAN Data or Reprint of PAN Card inside “Application Type.”
Step 4: Individuals will be required to fill up all the necessary details. Choose “Individual” in its category section. In addition, enter information like name, date of birth, mobile number, email id, and captcha code. Upon completion of providing all the information, click “Submit.”
Step 5: On this redirected page, click “Continue” along with the PAN Application form to go to a new page.
Step 6: On this new page, select "Submit Scanned Images Through e-Sign" to upload documents.
Step 7: Individuals need to mention their PAN that they want to surrender or cancel and select “Next”.
Step 8: On this page, individuals need to provide details like identity proof, residence, and date of birth and also upload the scanned signature, photograph, and other documents as per requirement.
Step 9: Please note that an acknowledgement slip of the cancellation request of PAN must be signed by the individual. However, in case a PAN of a business has been surrendered, the authorised signatories must do the needful.
Step 10: Once all details have been uploaded, verify all the information that has been provided and proceed to make a payment.
Step 11: Once payment is made in full, individuals will be able to download this acknowledgement number and print the same for future purposes.
Step 12: Individuals can also send a printed copy of this acknowledgement number to the NSDL e-Gov with two photographs. The subject of an envelope must have a label stating “Application for PAN Cancellation” and send that same to the address:

Apply for PAN Card Cancellation Offline
Process 1:
Step 1: Go to your nearest NSDL TIN facilitation centre.
Step 2: Get Form 49A and enter all details in the form. The purpose of Form 49A is to make any changes to the PAN card.
Step 3: Next, submit the properly filled-up form at the nearest NSDL TIN facilitation centre. Once done, request for correction in a PAN card option in the centre to complete the process.
Process 2:
Individuals can also apply for PAN card cancellation by sending a mail to the immediate Assessing Officer. To do that, individuals need to provide all the essential details in the letter which mostly include:
- Name of an individual.
- Permanent residential address.
- Information about a PAN card that one wants to cancel and retain.
After completion of providing all the details, individuals must collect a copy of the acknowledgement for the PAN card that is up for cancellation. This letter will act as proof that the IT Department has cancelled this PAN card possessed by an individual.
