Road Tax in Bihar

According to the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, Indian States are vested in charging and collecting the road tax. States need to do this since the maintenance of the roads falls under their purview. How is Road Tax Calculated?

Bihar parivahan tax is calculated based on the make, the engine capacity, vehicle type, seating capacity, age of the vehicle and the usage of the various vehicles. Before we look at the tax, there is one item to understand. This is the ex-showroom price of the car since the road tax is calculated on this particular amount. “Ex-showroom price” means the cost of Vehicle Including CGST, SGST, IGST and Compensation Cess.

Road Tax Rates for Two-wheelers in Bihar

The RTO charges in Bihar for new private two-wheelers are as follows.

How to Pay Road Tax Online in Bihar

Bihar road tax payment online can be made using the following website https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahanservice/vahan/ui/statevalidation/homepage.xhtml. You can also pay the road tax offline by visiting the nearest RTO. You have to take a form, provide your identification details and pay the money. Do not forget to take the receipt once complete. 

Here are the steps to use the website and pay your road tax:

Step 1: Visit the website by clicking on the link https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahanservice/vahan/ui/statevalidation/homepage.xhtml.

Step 2: In the left corner of the screen enter your vehicle’s registration number and select the state and RTO. 

Step 3: Click on Login.

Step 4: Select the “Pay Your Tax” option.

Step 5: Enter your vehicle’s registration amount and fill in the details.

Step 6: You will be directed to a payment gateway.

Step 7: Pay in the amount and collect the receipt. 

The process is complete!

Women who have a three or four-wheeler as a commercial vehicle and holding valid driving license are exempted from paying such a tax. Invalid carriages also have no tax levied on them.

What is the penalty of non-payment of tax in Bihar?

The person who has not paid the tax will have to clear his dues, and there will be a fine as prescribed by the State's government discretion in case of non-payment. This provision is made in the Bihar Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 1994.

What is the timeframe within which to pay the road tax in Bihar?
