Senior Citizen Health Insurance

What is Senior Citizen Health Insurance Policy?

A Senior Citizen Policy is specifically designed for individuals aged 60 years or older, to provide coverage during any illness, treatment, emergency or surgery..

It provides financial coverage for medical expenses, including critical illnesses and accidental hospitalisation, annual health check-ups, and daycare procedures. It also includes special benefits such as home hospitalisation and psychiatric support.

You know life always comes back in a full circle, and the hands that once held ours now need care from us. Getting health insurance for senior parents or grandparents is our way of saying, “We’ve got you covered, just as you always had us.”😌

Why Senior Citizens Need a Health Insurance Policy?

1
The out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure for inpatient care for elderly people is twice that of younger people. (1)
2
Old-age women are more prone to diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and osteoarthritis compared to men. (2)
3
The elderly population of those 60 and above are more likely to experience major depression, women (9%) and males (7%). (3)

Ideal Coverage for Senior Citizen Health Insurance

What’s an Ideal Coverage for Senior Citizen Health Insurance?

Ideal coverage means having sufficient health insurance to cover your hospital bills without depleting your savings. An ideal health insurance plan for a senior citizen must have comprehensive coverage that can meet medical expenses.

To choose the ideal coverage, here are a few important points to keep in mind:

  • Low Waiting Period for Pre-existing Conditions: Prefer plans with a 1 - 2 year waiting period for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or arthritis.
  • No Co-payment Clause: Avoid plans that require seniors to pay a percentage of the claim amount. Look for zero co-payment options.
  • City or Zone: If you live in polluted metro cities, toiling with traffic and bearing office stress daily, you may be at a higher risk of falling ill. Opt for a higher sum insured in such cases to avoid out-of-pocket expenses.
  • High Sum Insured: Ensures the policy has a high sum insured sufficient protection against major surgeries, chronic illness treatments, and long-term hospitalisation.
  • Lifetime Renewability: Ensure the policy can be renewed without age restrictions, offering coverage well into the 80s and beyond.

Things to Consider Before Buying Senior Citizen Health Insurance

Senior citizens are susceptible to severe illnesses that require costly treatment in their old age. They might need health insurance to cover the cost of the treatment. Here are some important factors you must consider while choosing a health policy for senior citizens:

Sum Insured

The sum insured in your senior citizen health insurance plan must be sufficient. Your medical costs, including preventative checkups, prescription drugs, hospital stays, and emergency medical care, should be covered.

To guarantee proper coverage, always consider all of your medical costs and emergencies when determining your sum insured amount.

Daycare Treatment Coverage

Because of advancements in medical technology, many treatments and surgeries can now be performed through daycare procedures. However, a senior citizen must be hospitalised for at least 24 hours to file a claim under standard health insurance coverage.

Waiting Period

Waiting periods in health insurance for particular illnesses can differ from one insurance company to another. Seek out senior citizen health insurance with no waiting period or a minimal waiting period to cover any illness.

Claim Settlement & Procedure

When it comes time to file a claim, you want to ensure that the ratio and claim settlement procedure are simple and effective. Before buying any health insurance for parents (below 60) or senior citizens (above 60), consider the claim settlement ratio of the insurance companies.

Network of Hospitals

A cashless claim settlement is among the most effective methods of filing a claim. However, this benefit is only available if you use one of the hospitals in the insurance provider's network. As a result, consider the quantity and type of hospitals your preferred insurance company offers and choose appropriately.

No Claim Bonus

If the policyholder hasn't filed any claims in the past year, almost all insurance companies offer a no-claim bonus discount. In such a scenario, either the policy premium drops or the sum covered rises. Check with the insurance company on the bonus they provide in a no claim year.

Co-payment

A co-payment clause is a feature of many senior citizen health plans that requires the policyholder to pay a portion of the claim amount. The insurance company just pays the remaining fraction of the claim amount. You must, therefore, choose a plan with a low or no co-payment.

Add-on Benefits

Every health insurance plan will have add-on benefits you can customise. When searching for a senior health insurance plan, consider the available add-ons and select one that meets your needs.

Domiciliary Hospitalisation

Sometimes, an elderly person's health may prevent them from being admitted to a hospital. In this situation, home treatment costs will be covered by health plans that provide domiciliary hospitalisation, provided that a qualified physician has recommended it.

Policy Renewability

To avoid having to purchase another health plan as you age, always search for the finest health insurance plan with a lifetime renewability option. An elderly citizen shouldn't have a policy that doesn't renew, especially after 60 years.

Tax Benefit on Health Insurance for Senior Citizens Under Section 80D of Income Tax

In addition to guaranteeing that medical costs would be covered, a senior citizen health policy enables you to take advantage of a tax deduction under section 80D of the Income Tax Act of 1961.

If you have a mediclaim for senior citizens (your ageing parents), you can receive an income tax refund of up to Rs 50,000. And, every fiscal year, you can also receive an extra Rs 5,000 tax refund on payments for preventive medical examinations.

For example, Smita (28 years old) pays a premium of Rs 30,000 annually under health insurance for herself. In addition, she also pays a premium of Rs 40,000 annually for her parents (aged above 60 years). In such a case, what will be her tax deductible?

A few of these plans are directly under government control. However, some are provided by state-run insurers.
