The preferred language for SMS communication needs to be set, and for doing so, the first three characters of the preferred language must be used. This facility for checking EPF balance through SMS is available in Hindi, English, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Gujarati Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu, and Tamil.
For example, if an individual wants updates in English, the first three characters of the word ENGLISH must be used, like EPFOHO UAN ENG. Similarly, if any individual wants message updates in Marathi, then the format in which they must type is EPFOHO UAN MAR.

An individual can carry out an EPF balance check on mobile through a missed call from the registered mobile number to the authorized phone. This service can only be availed if UAN is integrated with the Know Your Customer details. If one faces any issue regarding this, seek help from the employer.
After integration of UAN with KYC details, to go about this process, one must place a missed call on the EPF balance enquiry number 011-22901406 from the registered mobile number. On placing this missed call, an SMS would be received providing one with Provident Fund details.

Check Balance in Umang App:
An individual can check the PF balance in the Umang app in addition to these above methods. Umang or Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance app has been recently launched by the Electronics and IT Ministry. It is a single platform that contains various government services like gas booking, crop insurance, Aadhaar, EPF and NPS.
One must navigate to Google Play Store to download this Umang application. In addition to checking the Employee Provident Fund balance, one can track and raise claims on this application. By using the registered mobile number of the member, a one-time registration has to be generated to get access to this application.
Following are the steps which would guide one to view Employee Provident Fund transactions through this app:
- Firstly install the application and open it on your phone.
- Select the EPFO option.
- Choose ‘Employee Centric Services.’
- The next screen would display an option stating ‘View Passbook.’ Select that option. After selecting it, you would need to input your UAN.
- You would receive an OTP on the registered mobile number. Enter that OTP.
- Select the ‘Login’ option.
After this, all EPF transactions, which includes deposits and withdrawals from present and previous employment (if applicable), would be viewable to you.
