Located 25 kilometres south of Dehradun city, it is the state's busiest and the 30th busiest airport in India, with over 1 million annual passengers. Commercial operations began on 30 March 2008, after a runway extension to accommodate larger aircraft. The Government of Uttarakhand has acquired 1.9780 hectares of land to expand the airport.
