According to the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Taxation Act of 1974, Tondiarpet follows the Tamil Nadu road tax. The officials decide the road tax amount depending on the vehicle’s cost, engine capacity and other factors.

Commercial Vehicles:

• Above 15000 Kg: ₹2300 + ₹50 per 250 Kg excess of 15000 Kg

• Weight Less Than 3000 Kg: ₹600

• Under 3000 Kg to 9000 Kg: ₹950 to ₹1500

• Under 9000 Kg to 15000 Kg: ₹1900 to ₹2500

Two-Wheelers:

• Over 11 Years: 5% 

• Vehicles Below 1 Year: 7.75% 

• Under 1 to 5 Years: 7.5% to 6.75% 

• Under 5 to 11 Years: 6.5% to 5.25%

Four-Wheelers:

• Over 11 Years: 6% (under ₹10 Lakhs) and 11% (over ₹10 Lakhs)

• Vehicles Below 1 Year: 8.75% (under ₹10 Lakhs) and 13.75% (above ₹10 Lakhs)

• Under 1 to 5 Years: 8.5% to 7.75% (below ₹10 Lakhs) and 13.5% to 12.75% (above ₹10 Lakhs)

• Under 5 to 11 Years: 7.5% to 6.25% (below ₹10 Lakhs) and 12.5% to 11.25% (above ₹10 Lakhs)

Tondiarpet penalises citizens for not following traffic rules under the jurisdictions of the set traffic fines in Chennai. The most occurring traffic fines in Tondiarpet include the following: 

• Juvenile Driving Offences: ₹25000 + up to 3 years in prison

• Driving Without a Valid Permit: ₹5000 

• Disobeying Orders of Traffic Police: ₹2000

Yes, it is mandatory to have motor insurance while driving in any city, state or Union Territories of India. Otherwise, an individual has to pay a fine of ₹2000 for not having insurance while driving for the first time. Additionally, the fine will be ₹4000 for repetition of the same violation.

According to a recent report, poor and damaged road conditions are making it inconvenient for people to drive on TH Road in Tondiarpet. The residents have been using this road in extremely unsafe conditions for months. 

Another news confirms the Greater Chennai Corporation has asked for tenders at Tondiarpet, Alandur and Anna Nagar zones to reduce traffic congestion. The construction of 3 bridges will cost around 73.84 crores.

The traffic police of Tondiarpet have conducted a traffic awareness programme to make the city of Chennai free from accidents. It involved traders' associations, residents' welfare associations, auto and call taxi associations, along with 150 other places. They discussed the importance of wearing seat belts, helmets and following traffic rules while driving.
