How to Check TDS Status, Challan Status & Get Refund

TDS comprises tax deducted at the income source and remitted to the Central Government's account while an individual receives the remaining amount as earnings.

However, a refund for this TDS arises when you pay TDS higher than your actual payable tax for an FY. If you face such circumstances in a given financial year, you can claim a refund and apply for the same.

The government has made it easier for taxpayers to track their deducted tax and TDS refund status.

How to Check TDS Refund Status?

After applying for a refund, you can check TDS refund status online. 

Here is a step-by-step guide -

Step 1: Visit the e-Filling website and log in with your credentials. 

Step 2: Click on: E-file > Income Tax Return > View Filled Return

Step 3: You will get the status of your Income Tax Return Processing. If return has been processed perfectly Refund will be credited to your prevalidated bank account.

Step 4: If Refund has been failed then you can create refund reissue request by following these steps: DashBoard > Services > Refund Reissue > Create Refund Reissue Request.

How to Check TDS Challan Status?

Taxpayers use a TDS challan to deposit TDS with the government.

You can check your TDS challan status by following these steps -

For Taxpayers

There are 2 options available for taxpayers to check TDS challan status in TIN. These are -

CIN Challan Status

Step 1: Visit the official website of NSDL and choose CIN (Challan Identification Number).

Step 2: Provide all relevant information, such as BSR Code of Collecting Branch, Challan Tender Date and other crucial details. 

Step 3: Select "View", and the information will display on-screen. 

You can view the following information -

  • BSR Code
  • Serial number of challan
  • PAN or TAN
  • Tax Payer's name
  • Challan deposit date
  • Major Head Code with description
  • Date of receipt
  • Whether the amount entered is correct

TAN Challan Status

Step 1: After visiting the NSDL website, click on “Challan Enquiry”. Select the TAN based view.

Step 2: Enter your TAN number, deposit date, month and year.

Now, you can view the following information -

  • Major Head Code and description
  • Nature of payment
  • CIN
  • Minor Head Code

Remember: If you enter an amount against CIN, the system will verify whether your entered amount is similar to the one uploaded by the bank.

In both cases, if you notice "no records found" and it has been more than 1 week, contact the bank through which you have deposited your TDS challan.

Tax collecting banks can opt from the 2 options to check TDS challan status.

For Bank Branch

The tax collecting branch can view the total number of challans deposited and the total amount for each major head code. It needs to provide branch scroll date, major head code with description.

Other important details include -

  • Challan tender date
  • Serial number of a challan
  • Taxpayer's name 
  • Amount
  • TAN or PAN
  • Date of receipt

For Nodal Branch

A nodal bank branch can view the following information -

  • Scroll date 
  • Major head code and description
  • Taxpayer's name
  • TDS Amount
  • Number of challan and branches

With each scroll date, it can view -

  • BSR Code
  • Branch scroll number and date
  • Number of challans and total TDS amount
  • Date of receipt 

As a deductor, you can also check challan status on TRACES. TRACES is a new portal with an improved user interface.

How to View TDS Challan Status Using CIN

Step 1: Register yourself on TRACES or log in using your existing TIN and TAN User ID and password.

Step 2: Select “Statements or Payment” and choose "Challan Status" from the drop-down list.

Step 3: Select CIN and click on "Period of Payment", and select "Go" to proceed.

The result will be displayed on the screen.

How to View TDS Challan Status Using BIN

  1. If you seek to view challan status using BIN, choose BIN and "Period of Payment". Hit "Go". 
  2. Enter BIN details. Now, click on "Consumption Details" to see details of TDS challan.

How to Check TDS Status Online?

As a taxpayer, you need to file a TDS return and submit the same each quarter of a financial year to the Income Tax Department. This quarterly statement summarises the TDS collected and the tax paid by a payer to the Income Tax Department.

Steps to Track TDS Status Using PAN card

1. Visit the official TRACES portal.

2. Enter the verification code or captcha and select "Proceed."

3. Provide the following relevant details -

  • PAN and TAN
  • Quarter financial year, and return type.

Complete the process by hitting "Go."

Steps to View TDS Statement Online

You can check the TDS status via Form 26AS by the following methods -

  1. Visit the official website of e-Filing.
  2. If you are a new member, register yourself. If you have an existing User ID and password, log in with the credentials.
  3. Select E-file>Income Tax Return>View Form 26AS> View Tax Credit (Form 26AS/Annual Tax Statement)
  4. Choose "Year" and "PDF Format". Download the PDF file.

You can open the password-protected file by entering your date of birth in format DDMMYYYY. Another available option is checking the TDS return statement through the net banking portal. You must link your PAN card to the net banking portal to check the same.
