How to e-Verify Your Income Tax Return Online?

Verification is essential after filing your returns. In this post, we will see how to do e-verification of ITR.

But first, we need to know what ITR e-verification is-

Instead of following the age-old method of downloading, signing, and posting your ITR acknowledgement to CPC, you can now verify it online. This not only makes your work more hassle-free it also brings down the cost of compliance.

Steps for ITR e-verification

You can choose to get your ITR verification done either online or offline. Let’s see how to do e-verification of income tax return-

Online

  • Use your credentials to log in to incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Select the ‘View Returns/Forms’ option to see your e-filed tax returns.
  • Click on ‘Click Here’ to view your returns pending for verification.
  • Select the e-verify option.
  • After clicking, you will see a list of modes through which you can generate an EVC. (We have discussed the same in detail below.)
  • After you have successfully generated the EVC through your chosen mode, enter it and submit it.
  • An alert pop-up for confirmation is displayed along with a transaction ID and EVC code. Click on the green button to download the attachment for your records, and that’s it. You have successfully e-verified your ITR.

Offline

We all know the age-old method of downloading and printing the acknowledgement, then posting it to CPC, Bengaluru.

This process needs to be done within 30 days of the acknowledgement being issued.

However, you can also verify your ITR offline through your bank’s ATM. Here is how you can do that too-

  • Insert your ATM or debit card into the slot of the machine.
  • Select PIN for the e-filing option to proceed further.
  • You will receive the EVC on your registered mobile number.
  • Once you receive your EVC, you can log into your e-filing portal and verify your ITR. To do so, select the option of an already generated EVC through a bank ATM.

How to do e-verification through net banking

  • Sign in to your bank account and click on the income tax filing tab on the home page.
  • Select the ‘e-Verify’ option; you will be taken to the official website of the IT department.
  • The next step in the process of how to do EVC through net banking is to select the ‘My Account’ option and generate EVC on the e-filing page.
  • You will receive the EVC on your registered email ID and mobile number.
  • Verify your returns using this EVC.

Bank ATM

  • Insert your ATM card into the machine slot and select ‘Generate PIN for e-Filing.’
  • EVC will be sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Log in and choose the ‘e-Verify Using Bank ATM’ option.
  • Enter received EVC to get your ITR verified.

Bank account number

  • Visit the ITR portal and select the quick links tab. Select ‘e-Verify Return,’ which appears in the drop-down.
  • Enter details like assessment year, PAN, acknowledgement number, and click on ‘e-Verify.’
  • Select the ‘Generate EVC Through the Bank Account Number’ option.
  • You will be directed to a new screen where you have to pre-validate your bank account.
  • Select your bank’s name, enter the IFSC code along with your registered mobile number. Click on the pre-validate option.
  • After you are done pre-validating, click on the yes option, which appears on the next screen. You will receive EVC on your registered mobile number.
  • Enter received EVC to complete your verification process.

Demat account

  • Log in to the IT e-filing account.
  • Select the ‘Profile Setting’ button and proceed to select the ‘Pre-validate Your Demat Account’ option.
  • Fill out details like DP ID, Client ID, Depository Type (NSDL/CDSL), Mobile Number, and email ID.
  • Click on the ‘Pre-validate’ button.
  • Select yes and your registered phone number will receive the EVC.
  • Use EVC received to verify your returns.

Aadhaar card

  • Link Aadhaar number and PAN.
  • Visit the IRT filing website and select the ‘e-Verify using the Aadhaar OTP’ option.
  • You will receive an OTP on the mobile number linked to the Aadhaar number.
  • Enter the OTP received for e-verification. This process must be done fast as the OTP validity is 10 mins.
  • Your e-verification is complete; you can also download the attachment for your records.

Why verify your ITR?

After learning how to do income tax e-verification, understanding why you must file it is crucial. Verifying your ITR is as necessary as filing it. Without proper verification, your ITR stands unrecognised. This means you will need to file your ITR again, even if you have filed it on time.

With the e-verification methods, now you won’t have to download, sign and post the acknowledgement to CPC Bengaluru, making it hassle-free and easy to perform on our busy schedule.

FAQs about ITR e-Verification

How do I verify whether my ITR is verified?

You can check your verification status from the official website by entering your PAN, acknowledgement number and displayed captcha code if you have e-verified. If you have sent the ITR-V by post, you shall receive the acknowledgement in your registered email.

What will happen if I fail to verify my ITR within 30 days?

If you do not get your ITR verified, it will stand invalid. This means that in the IT department's eye, you have not filed for that particular AY and shall have to bear penalties.

What to do if ITR-V gets rejected?

Find out the reason for rejection first; then, you can file a revised return and verify the same within 30 days of filing your original taxes.
