How are National Highways in India Numbered?

On 28th April 2010, the Ministry of road and Transport and Highway came up with a new numbering system to number the national highway network. Here are the rules used to name the national highways in India. The numbering system depends on the highway's location and demographic orientation.

  • For the highways stretching from North to South, even numbers are used to number them.
  • Highways running from East to West, odd numbers are assigned to mark them.
  • All major highways are marked with a single-digit number or two-digit number.
  • A three-digit number indicates subsidiary highways. For instance, NH 144, and NH 244 are subsidiaries of National Highway 44.
  • Further, the sections of subsidiary highways are denoted by suffixes like A, B, C and D.
