Water plays a crucial role in agriculture. The uses of water in agriculture are diverse but primarily include irrigation, sustaining livestock and many others. To improve water efficiency in agriculture, the Government of India has launched the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). Through this scheme, the Government provides advanced irrigation facilities to farmers.

With ‘Har Khet Ko Pani’ being the motto, the Government of India launched Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana on 1st July 2015.

This scheme aims to expand the cultivated area with ensured irrigation, decreased water wastage and enhanced water efficiency.

PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana generate new sources to ensure irrigation especially protective irrigation, by tapping rainwater at a micro level via ‘Jal Sanchay’ and ‘Jal Sinchan’.

Note: The Government provides incentives for micro water through subsidies for guaranteeing ‘Per drop More Crop’.

The Inter-Ministerial National Steering Committee (NSC) monitors the PMKSY scheme. This scheme has merged the accelerated irrigation benefit program, integrated watershed management program and on-farm water management under one scheme.

The Central Government has decided to invest ₹ 50,000 crores for the implementation of the PMKSY scheme in five years. Here, the Government will offer farmers irrigation equipment at a subsidised rate.

Through this scheme, the Government puts emphasis on ways of irrigation that uses less water during irrigation (such as drip irrigation) and maximises production.

Farmers are the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana. However, there are certain eligibility criteria that farmers need to fulfil. These are as follows,

• Farmers of every class and section are eligible to apply for this scheme.
• Farmers must own land.
• Members belonging to the Self-help group, Cooperative societies, Producer Farmer’s Group can apply for this scheme.
• Farmers farming under the lease agreement are eligible for this scheme.
